Product Peculiarity

Bright colors

Discharge inks can achieve bright color effects on dark fabrics, especially for printing on black or dark cotton fabrics.

Soft feel

The printed pattern feels soft, consistent with the feel of the fabric itself.

Environmental protection

Water-based formulations are usually used, which are more environmentally friendly than solvent-based inks.

Durability

The printed pattern has good washable resistance and wear resistance.

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages

  • Achieve a bright pattern effect on dark fabrics.
  • The printed pattern feels soft.
  • Good environmental protection.

Limitations

  • Suitable for a limited range of fabrics, mainly suitable for cotton fabrics.
  • The printing process is more complex and requires certain technical experience and equipment.
  • Some colors, such as pure black or vivid red, can be difficult to achieve.
  • Through the reasonable selection and use of discharge ink, the effect and quality of screen printing on dark fabrics can be significantly improved.

Printing Process

Design and Plate making

First design the pattern and transfer it to the screen plate. Screen printing plates need to be coated with a photographic emulsion, and through exposure to harden the emulsion to form a pattern. The part of the emulsion that is not hardened will allow the ink to pass through, thus forming a pattern on the fabric.

Ink preparation

Discharge ink needs to be mixed with activator and pigment. When the mixed ink is ready, it is ready for printing.

Printing

Placing the screen plate on the fabric, the ink is evenly scraped across the screen, and the ink is transferred to the fabric through the open part of the screen.

Curing

After printing is complete, the fabric needs to be heated to activate the bleach in the ink and complete the discharge process. After curing, the color of the pattern on the fabric is revealed, and the remaining ink and chemicals are finally removed by washing.

Suitable Fabric & Safety

Cotton Fabrics

Discharge inks are best used on cotton fabrics, especially dark cotton fabrics.

Other Fabrics

While cotton works best, it can also be used on other natural fiber fabrics, though the results may vary. Synthetic fibers (such as polyester, nylon) are usually not suitable for discharge processes because their dyes cannot be removed.

Environmental Factors

Environmentally friendly: Discharge inks usually use water-based formulations that have less impact on the environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is discharge ink and how does it work?
Discharge ink is a water-based formulation mixed with an activator that removes the original dye from dark fabrics (primarily cotton) and replaces it with the desired pigment, resulting in a bright and vibrant print.
Why does discharge printing feel softer than regular printing?
Unlike standard plastisol inks that sit on top of the fabric as a plastic layer, discharge ink replaces the fabric's original dye. This leaves the printed pattern feeling incredibly soft and consistent with the natural texture of the fabric.
Can I use discharge ink on 100% polyester garments?
No, discharge ink is not suitable for synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon because their synthetic dyes cannot be chemically discharged or removed by this process. It works best on 100% cotton fabrics.
What are the environmental benefits of using discharge paste?
Discharge paste and inks typically utilize water-based formulations. This makes them significantly more environmentally friendly and safer to use compared to traditional solvent-based screen printing inks.
Is heat curing required for discharge printing?
Yes, curing is a critical step. After printing, the fabric must be heated to activate the discharge agent (bleach) inside the ink to remove the original fabric dye and reveal the new color. Washing is then recommended to remove any remaining chemicals.
