Product Peculiarity

Bright colors

Discharge inks can achieve bright color effects on dark fabrics, especially for printing on black or dark cotton fabrics.

Soft feel

The printed pattern feels soft, consistent with the feel of the fabric itself.

Environmental

Water-based formulations are usually used, which are more environmentally friendly than solvent-based inks.

Durability

The printed pattern has good washable resistance and wear resistance.

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages

  • Achieve a bright pattern effect on dark fabrics.
  • The printed pattern feels soft.
  • Good environmental protection.

Limitations

  • Suitable for a limited range of fabrics, mainly suitable for cotton fabrics.
  • The printing process is more complex and requires certain technical experience and equipment.
  • Some colors, such as pure black or vivid red, can be difficult to achieve.
  • Through the reasonable selection and use of discharge ink, the effect and quality of screen printing on dark fabrics can be significantly improved.

Printing Process

01

Design and Plate making

First design the pattern and transfer it to the screen plate. Screen printing plates need to be coated with a photographic emulsion, and through exposure to harden the emulsion to form a pattern. The part of the emulsion that is not hardened will allow the ink to pass through, thus forming a pattern on the fabric.
02

Ink preparation

Discharge ink needs to be mixed with activator and pigment. When the mixed ink is ready, it is ready for printing.
03

Printing

Placing the screen plate on the fabric, the ink is evenly scraped across the screen, and the ink is transferred to the fabric through the open part of the screen.
04

Curing

After printing is complete, the fabric needs to be heated to activate the bleach in the ink and complete the discharge process. After curing, the color of the pattern on the fabric is revealed, and the remaining ink and chemicals are finally removed by washing.

Suitable Fabric

Cotton fabrics

Discharge inks are best used on cotton fabrics, especially dark cotton fabrics.

Other fabrics

While cotton works best, it can also be used on other natural fiber fabrics, though the results may vary.

Not suitable for fabrics

Synthetic fibers (such as polyester, nylon) are usually not suitable for discharge processes because their dyes cannot be removed.

Environmental factors and safety

🌿

Environmentally friendly: Discharge inks usually use water-based formulations that have less impact on the environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is discharge ink and how does it work?

Discharge ink is a water-based ink that works by removing the original dye of natural fabrics (like cotton) and replacing it with the desired pigment. When heated, the active discharging agent bleaches the fabric's original color, allowing the design to display vibrant shades.

Can I use discharge ink on polyester or synthetic fabrics?

No, discharge ink is not suitable for 100% synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon. Synthetic dyes do not react to the discharging agent, meaning the ink cannot strip the color or bond correctly to the fibers.

Why does discharge printing feel softer than other printing methods?

Traditional prints like plastisol sit on top of the fabric, creating a thick plastic layer. Discharge printing dyes the actual fibers of the garment, leaving the print with an incredibly soft hand feel that matches the fabric itself.

Is heat curing required for discharge ink?

Yes, heat curing is essential. The fabric must be heated after printing to activate the activator in the ink. This chemical reaction is what removes the fabric's base dye and permanently sets the print.

Are water-based discharge inks environmentally friendly?

Yes, water-based discharge inks are generally much more eco-friendly than solvent-based inks. They contain fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and chemical solvents, reducing their environmental impact.

Are there any colors that are difficult to achieve with discharge printing?

Yes, some specific colors, such as pure black or extremely vivid reds, can be difficult to achieve perfectly. The final color output depends heavily on the quality and type of the original dye on the cotton fabric.
